Active Denial SystemThe Air Force’s Active Denial System (ADS) has been approved by military scientists for use in Iraq after ten years of development.

The ADS shoots a 94GHz millimeter wave (compared to a 2.45 GHz wave found in a standard microwave oven) that will kick your candy ass. In fact, no one in the years of testing could endure the pain it produced for longer than 5 seconds. Naturally, this device has the ability to disperse a crowd in no time – especially when you consider that anyone within 500 meters of the ADS will be in a world of hurt.

Military research claims that the effects are not long lasting with “prolonged redness” and “small blisters” being the biggest injuries reported. However, many are concerned about the risk of cancer or eye damage that could be associated with exposure. Once again, the military believes that these concerns are unfounded based on the results of extensive testing.

While I wouldn’t expect ADS to be rushed into service, you can bet that when it finally does see action controversy will soon follow.
