Engineers at Cambridge University are developing “shape shifting” technology for solid state structures that could be used to develop more portable computers.
Apparently, the challenge is to develop a product that maintains “the original strength and stiffness of an object while allowing for dramatic changes in shape.”
So far, the team has developed a prototype A5-sized flat display screen that can take the shape of a tube small enough to fit in a briefcase or pocket.
The potential for this type of technology is vast, but the idea of strong, flexible displays is high on the list of practical applications. In fact, Cambridge is currently seeking partners to help develop products – meaning we could get our hands on them sometime in the near future.
