Skype is offering their service to connect their VoIP service to landline and mobile phones in the US and Canada for the remainder of the year for free. They normally charges 2 cents per minute for the service. Calls to and within other countries will continue to incur the charges.
Skype has always offered free internet only calls and they will continue to charge for their Skype-In service that allows their users to receive calls from landline phones. They may get a number of people trying their service with this strategy, because without the ability to contact people on their landline phones, the service is only so useful. Costs nothing to try.
