Tractor beams are the stuff of science fiction, but scientists at Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) have actually made one. It’s not anywhere near the scale of what caused trouble for the Millennium Falcon, but it’s a start. Working with a laser that creates a special particular distribution of light intensity called a Bessel beam they were able to pull a particle backwards, just like a tractor beam. We’re talking particles not spaceships, because they say a beam that large would damage the object. Sill, NASA has been working with Bessel beams and since they actually do make spaceships, I say it’s just a matter of time.
