Sony’s $1,000+ Blu Ray Player

Sony today announced that they will begin shipping their Blu Ray player in July with a price at $1000 or more. At the same time they announced products for PC’s and laptops that will enable Blu Ray discs to be written and read, prices for the PC starting at $2300.

The standalone player will support 1920 x 1080p output through an HDMI connection, and play MPEG2, MPEG4-AVC and VC1 video formats. Analog component outputs for 1080i will also be included. As reported here earlier, Sony will not be downgrading the analog signal, at least for now.

Still not sure what the plan is for market domination when they are last to market (althoug HD DVD is trying to  give that away) and their players are nearly twice as expensive. I don’t want to dwell on this fact (although I will), but everyone could have made more money, faster if they had all just agreed on a single standard.

I completely agree. My money is on HD-DVD unless the PS3 with Blu-ray can come in at a reasonable price.
