The Dentist Drill May Be A Thing Of The Past

In the second peace of dentistry news to report this week (see “Teeth Jacked Up? Grow New Ones!“), Physicists have developed a plasma needle that has the potential to remove cancerous tissue, clear blocked arteries, and replace the dentist’s drill. And the best part is that it is absolutely painless.
“Using higher-energy doses of plasma, in longer bursts, the team was able to target certain living cells and cauterise the tissue while leaving surrounding cells undamaged. “The plasma needle could be used to excise tumours or skin cancers,” says the needle’s creator, Physicist Eva Stoffels-Adamowicz. “It’s surgery without cutting.”
How long it will be before this technology gets in the hands of your local dentist is tough to say - but it might be sooner than you think. Still, it gives the throngs of nervous patients out there hope that they will soon be free of the horrible, horrible sound of that barbaric drill.
