The Ten Worst Products of 2005

PC Magazine has just released it’s annual list of the ten worst tech products of the year. These are definitely products you don’t want on your holiday shopping list.

Here is the list - posted in reverse order for dramatic effect.

10. Oakley Thump Sunglasses: - $500 for a pair of sunglasses with an MP3 player attached? Just pick up an iPod and avoid looking like an idiot.

9. Voodoo Doll D210: This computer has some power but at $3000, it is far to expensive to justify purchasing. Especially since all you get is the box.

8. H2i SimplyTouch OpticalBar: Supposedly turns any monitor into a touch screen. Doesn’t work - enough said.

7. ROKR E1: The first iTunes enabled phone. I have complained about this one in the past - referring to it as an expensive silver brick with a 100 song iPod built in. Apple was trying to make a quick buck on this one.

6. Cinego D-1000: Projects your DVD’s onto the wall - but with horrible video quality.

5. PQI mPack P800 Media Player: PC Magazine writes - “Even with the most recent flash update, fast-forward and rewind simply do not work, despite the manual’s direction. The screen is terrible, the interface abysmal, and the physical buttons erratic.”

4. Dual XNAV3500P:Portable GPS system with a poor interface and data entry keypad. It failed PC Magazine’s testing.

3. PepperPad: More expensive than a laptop without all of that pesky functionality to worry about.

2. Sony S2 Sports Network Walkman NW-S23: It even looks stupid.

1. Samsung Digimax V700 Digital Camera: Finally, the biggest loser of the bunch. PC Magazine writes: “With slow performance, lousy auto-exposure, and some shutter lag, this 7.1-megapixel camera never should have been released.”

Overall, I can’t say that I agree entirely with PC Magazine’s list - at least with their choice for number one. While there are certainly better cameras on the market, the Digmax V700 is not nearly as bad as PC Mag makes it out to be. In fact, most major reviews rank it with an average or better score. Personally, I would throw it off the list and put the ROKR in its place - you simply can’t beat it on the disappointment factor.
