Top Firefox Config Tweaks

Firefox title=Many of those who have been using Firefox for a while now know that inserting about:config into the address bar can introduce you to a world of tweaking.

However, if you are a noob, do yourself a favor and check out the tweaks at Lifehacker and get the most out of your shiny new Firefox 2.0 browser.

Here are a few of my favorites from the list:

Session Restore: set the browser.startup.page key to 3 to restore your browsing session - including form entries. On default, Firefox 2.0 will restore your session when the browser crashes. Inserting this tweak will restore sessions every time you start your browser normally. It’s a great time saver.

Limit RAM usage: This is a big one folks. The biggest complaint about Firefox is that it is a memory hog. If you would like to adjust this problem to a more reasonable level, set your browser.cache.disk.capacity to a value that fits your total RAM. For RAM sizes between 512BM and 1GB, start with 15000. For RAM sizes between 128MB and 512M, try 5000.

Fetch only what you click: Firefox has a tendency to waste bandwith and CPU cycles by storing histories for web pages that it thinks you MIGHT view - even if you don’t. Set the network.prefetch-next key to false to remedy this problem.

Spellcheck in imput fields: To activate spellcheck in the input fields as well as text areas, set layout.spellcheckDefault to 2. No more spelling errors in subject areas of emails or blog post titles.
