And by “killer” I mean “wannabe.”
Today Amazon launched the Unbox movie download service in a preemptive strike against Apple’s upcoming iTunes Movie Store.
Here’s the facts:
- Unbox will offer TV shows for $1.99 per episode
- Movies will go for $7.99 to $14.99
- Movies can be rented for $3.99
- Downloads will include a high-quality DVD version and a portable version (using Windows DRM)
- Videos can be re-downloaded from your Amazon media library
Here’s what sucks:
- Not compatible with Macs or iPods
- Must have Windows Service Pack 2 or Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Update Rollup 2
- The Unbox movie player will not work videos purchased outside of Amazon.
- You can’t download more than one video file at a time.
- You can’t burn a movie to a DVD and play it. They can be burned for backup purposes only.
- Videos must be watched within 30 days. Once opened, you have 24 hours before it expires.
So you can’t play it on an iPod and you can only watch it on a television if you sync it with your PC. Doesn’t sound like much of a “killer” to me.
