Vista? That’s yesterday’s news. Get with the times Grandpa!
Microsoft has planned a “Vista R2″ codenamed “Fiji” that will be released in 2008 followed by a complete overhaul with “Vienna.”
Fiji will be a relatively minor release featuring an updated UI that will include many of the things originally promised in the original version of Vista like the much hyped WinFS. Other updates include a more powerful sidebar, .Net Framework 3.5 or maybe even 4, tighter integration with Windows Live, Monaco music tool (similar to Apple’s Garage Band), default playback of HD-DVD movies, a more advanced speech recognition, and DGSCB implementation for security purposes.
On the other hand, Windows Vienna will be a major reworking of the OS - the current interface will be completely stripped down (no more taskbars, start menu, etc), speech recognition will become more important, WinFS (or its successor) will replace NTFS, search will become more important, applications with non-managed code will run in a sandbox mode, and integration of numerous R&D projects will take place (a pie-menu is rumored).
Obviously, this information is in its early stages, so expect changes over time. Still, it appears that Microsoft is feeling the heat from the competition and understands that it is necessary to release updates in a timely manner if they want to stay on top.

I guess the idea is to let all the early adopters shake out the problems, then pick up the improved version later in the year. […]
