Wireless HD Consortium Formed

Seven companies, LG Electronics, Matsushita Electric Industrial, NEC, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and SiBEAM are forming a consortium to develop a wireless system for transmitting HD content over short distances. The goal is to allow all the different devices in your home to connect to your display without having to run a bunch of cables. And if you are running High Definition with a DVD player, Satellite and/or Cable box and a game system or two, you know the tangle of wires you have to hide. Not only that, but with a planned range of 32 feet, you can get those signals to places that would have required cables to be run across things such as fireplaces that are in the way. The best piece of news is that there is no plan for using compression, so there should be no signal degradation or loss.

The technical specs are planned to be finalized by spring of 2007, with a product hoped to be out in 2008. Ideally, if all these companies come up with a resonably cheap, viable product the technology could eventually be built into the various devices. Until then, we will have to live with add on devices that will probably cost us an arm and a leg. Maybe they will at least be competitive with the cost of Monster cables.
