Although this whole article brings back too many memories of Physics classes long past, the technology has interesting possibilities. Researchers at MIT are working on a means of transferring energy, and thus power, with no physical connection.
The whole thing works on the ability of resonating objects and their ability to create vibration in another resonant object at the same frequency. This means that needed energy is transferred, unused energy is absorbed.
I do have a few questions on the whole thing though. Is all this resonant energy harmful to people around it, especially since they would be surrounded by it all the time? Also, since it is based on transfer of energy, would the surge issue go away or just come up in another form? If there is nothing using the energy, how much power does is consume just sitting there?
In all, it looks like a promising field, though still in it’s infancy. It the end it will all come down to positives and negatives. Either there are dire negative consequences that make it impossible to use, or the number of negatives far outweigh the positives. Wireless power is a beautiful dream – we could all do without extension cords.
