Yahoo has introduced their Go for TV software that can turn any XP comuter with a TV tuner card into a DVR. In addition to providing the DVR, it also can play DVD’s and allows users to access other Yahoo entertainment services. All of this is a result of their purchase of Meedio’s technology assets.

Notes on the Yahoo! Go for TV Web site indicate you can do a wide array of features with this new free software, including viewing photos from Yahoo! Photos or flickr, searching and watching online videos, watching movie trailers and getting related information, listening to LaunchCast radio stations and watching music videos and using a computer’s built-in DVR to record and manage TV shows and movies.

I am sure Yahoo is looking to use this to drive users to their site and generate revenue. The question is whether they can offer a better product than others out there. If the Go for TV product doesn’t end up gaining much market share, they will not generate the revenue they hope from it. Let’s see what innovation they can add to their product in the future before deciding whether or not they can succeeed in this space.
