It’s long been believed that many of the original Doctor Who episodes featuring William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton were lost forever after the BBC got rid of a bunch of old footage. Now, thanks to some super-sleuthing fans, 106 episodes have been found at the Ethiopian Radio and Television Agency. The recovered episodes include those from The Crusade, The Enemy of the World and The Ice Warriors, all of which were only aired once.
The BBC sold copies of the episodes to the Ethiopian Agency before wiping the originals, but now they’re in the process of getting those copies returned. No word on what exactly they’ll do with them, but since they still own the copyright, there’s a good chance we’ll see them made available to the public in the future.
