Lucasfilm and Disney Worldwide Publishing announced their plan to release 20 new books devoted to Star Wars between now and December 18th when Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters.
All of these books will be set between Return of The Jedi and the new film. They are being released under the “Journey To Star Wars: The Force Awakens” moniker and will offer everything from novelizations, to YA fiction, to sticker books. And don’t forget that it’s all canon.
Additionally, the titles will be filled with Easter eggs that foreshadow events in the new movies. Needless to say, there’s been a lot of coordination to make this happen. From Entertainment Weekly:
“The Force Awakens is an extraordinarily, heavily guarded storyline. To track it, a lot of top-secret meetings were happening up in San Francisco as we worked through this program,” says Andrew Sugerman, executive vice president of Disney Publishing Worldwide. The company is managing the release through its own imprints as well as at least seven outside companies, among them sci-fi publisher Del Rey, DK, and Marvel Comics
These are the books that have been confirmed thus far:
- Star Wars: Aftermath from Del Rey, which sounds like a general catch up from the old trilogy to the new one.
- Moving Target – (Princess Leia story) by Cecil Castelucci
- The Weapon of a Jedi – (Luke Skywalker story) by Jason Fry
- Smuggler’s Run – (Han Solo story) by Greg Rucka
- Lost Stars by Claudia Gray
Marvel Comics will also be releasing a prequel called Star Wars: Journey to the Force Awakens and we’ll get a look at Star Wars: Ships of the Galaxy by Studio Fun International.
The idea is to introduce younger fans to characters from the original trilogy and give them more back story on the events preceding The Force Awakens. It will also be a way for longtime fans to see the characters and movies they treasure in a new light.
I, for one, am really excited to see what’s coming.
