Coulson Lives On In Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D. Television Series [NYCC]

One of the biggest pieces of news out of New York Comic Con is that Agent Phil Coulson will return in the upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. television series. Clark Gregg portrayed the beloved character in The Avengers, and the fan base was decidedly upset about his untimely death. In fact, you could say Coulson Lives has become somewhat of a movement. When Gregg took the stage at the Marvel panel at NYCC, the crowd reportedly went wild.

After Gregg mentioned a Life Model Decoy and needled Jeph Loeb about bringing him back, Joss Whedon made an appearance via video, and CBR was there to take it in.

“We all love Clark Gregg, there’s no doubt about that,” Whedon said. “From before we made ‘The Avengers,’ we discussed whether there was a way for him to be a part of the Marvel Universe, perhaps a part of a TV show even after his death. … The fact of the matter is, as much as we love him, now that I’m really running Marvel, I like to keep a type of artistic integrity, which means we don’t stretch the bounds of reality.”

“There was never going to be a ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.‘ show without Agent Phil Coulson!” said Feige, who appeared behind Whedon, wearing a COULSON LIVES shirt.

“He’s headlining the S.H.I.E.L.D. show and always was.” said Whedon.

Loeb then confirmed Gregg was the first person cast in the series. We don’t know if the series is a prequel to the movie or whether Coulson didn’t actually die. I actually don’t much care, I’m just happy to have Clark Gregg back in action.
