Game of Thrones has easter eggs tucked away, you just have to know where to look or listen. For example, Gandalf’s sword is hidden in the Iron Throne, and Meereen has a Monty Python connection. The tie was revealed in an interview with linguist David Peterson at Making Game of Thrones.
Remember when Daenerys approached the gates of Meereen, and they sent a champion to challenge her? He was shouting insults in Low Valyrian that Missandei translated, but she didn’t capture exactly what he was saying. The insults were actually taken from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Peterson explains:
There’s a scene where the Meereenese rider is challenging Daenerys’ champion. He’s shouting and Nathalie Emmanuel [Missandei] is translating – but she’s not translating what he’s saying. He’s actually saying a Low Valyrian translation of the French guy’s insults in ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail.’ That was [series creator] Dan Weiss’s idea and it was so hilarious that I had to do it.
I love learning those little tidbits.
Check out the Holy Grail scene they are referring to after the break…
