Check out the infographic after a break for a complete visual history of the Doctor’s companions / assistants over the years—starting with the first Doctor and concluding with the current version played by Matt Smith. It even includes important details about the characters.

Here’s the thing though: What constitutes a “companion?” Adam Mitchell was only in the TARDIS for an episode. Wilf and Mickey were more there just tagging along. To me, whenever someone starts talking about “favorite companions,” my mind immediately goes to anyone who travels constantly with The Doctor (usually 13 episodes, though Rory is an exception come Series 6). Heck, I don’t even call Capt. Jack an actual, full-fledged companion.
