Forget potato salad Kickstarters, Japan knows how to do crowd funding with style. There’s currently an effort to raise money on the Japanese crowdfunding site Readyfor to “Pierce the Moon With the Spear of Longinus”.
The project was first announced earlier this year, but according to RocketNews, it has become the fastest growing Japanese crowdfunding project ever with over 38 million yen ($313,000) raised so far.
The objective of the project is twofold: to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime and win the Google Lunar X PRIZE. Team Hakuto wants to send an unmanned lunar lander to the moon and attach a miniature replica of the spear in such a way that the spear will actually poke the moon upon landing.
I’m guessing Evangelion fans will get a kick out of this. However, the project still has a long way to go to raise the 100 million yen needed, and the deadline is April 5th.
