George R.R. Martin had previously announced that a $20K donation to his Prizeo campaign would earn that charitable person the opportunity to be killed off in The Song Of Ice And Fire series. That guy would be Facebook employee David Goldblatt of San Francisco, California.
He became a fan of the show after someone recommended he watch the first season. Goldblatt liked it so much that he went and read all the books, and eventually won the bid to have a character receive his name. There were two top prizes available in what was called the “martyr” level with one going to an unnamed woman and the other to Goldblatt. They’ll both be able to choose their character’s station and are guaranteed to have their character meet a grisly end.
Goldblatt chose to be a Valyrian saying, “You read some piece of fiction and for whatever reason you think one particular character or race is cool – and for whatever reason, I thought the Valyrians were cool. I’m hoping in future books we get to see more of them.”
Funds from the auction will go to Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary and the Food Depot of Santa Fe, New Mexico where Martin lives.
