Yes, there’s actually an Icelandic elf lobby called Friends of Lava and they’re currently petitioning the government to halt the progress of a highway because it will disturb the elf habitat, including an elf church. No, I haven’t been hitting the holiday nog early. This is a real story.
The group has both environmental and elf concerns and in the past has organized protests with hundreds of people to block bulldozers from their work. Ragnhildur Jonsdottir, a seer who claims to be able to communicate with the elves, says, “It will be a terrible loss and damaging both for the elf world and for us humans.”
Scandinavian folklore is rich with stories about elves and other mythological creatures and many Icelandic residents believe the creatures are real. In fact, “a survey conducted by the University of Iceland in 2007 found that 62% of the 1,000 respondents thought it was at least possible that elves exist.”
The final say on the project is going to come from the Supreme Court of Iceland who gets to rule on the case. Until then, the road goes nowhere and the elves can happily roam the countryside.
