The city of Leeds has decided to repaint their traditional red phone boxes in a lovely shade of TARDIS blue. They’ll also be outfitting these boxes with Wi-Fi and touchscreens so they can serve as Wi-Fi hubs with a radius of a few hundred yards.
The TARDIS blue phone boxes are also getting special recording devices so visitors and residents can record their impressions of Leeds for other people to watch (that won’t end well). The work is being done by a company called aql who says that these are going to be unique to Leeds and not popping up all over the UK.
“We want them to become something iconic. We won’t be putting the blue boxes in any other cities, as we want them to be a symbol of Leeds.”
And yes, the call boxes will actually make calls so they’re fully functioning emergency call boxes.
