Ready to get more excited about series eight of Doctor Who? Not only do we get a new Doctor in Peter Capaldi, we get a new series regular. Meet Danny Pink. Actor Samuel Anderson plays the teacher at Coal Hill School who will join the series… somehow. And yes, Coal Hill School should sound familiar. Clara teaches there (as seen in The Day of the Doctor) and the 1st Doctor’s companions taught there, too. Hmm. Here’s what Steven Moffat has to say about Danny Pink:
‘For the fourth time in Doctor Who history, Coal Hill School is coming to the aid of the TARDIS. In 1963 teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright accompanied the First Doctor. These days it’s the turn of Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. And very soon now, Sam Anderson as Danny Pink will be entering the world of the Doctor. But how and why? Answers are coming later this year in Peter Capaldi’s first series of Doctor Who!’
Anderson sounds exceptionally excited to be part of the beloved series:
‘I was so excited to join Doctor Who I wanted to jump and click my heels, but I was scared I might not come down before filming started! It’s a quintessential part of British culture and I can’t believe I’m part of it. It’s an honour to be able to work alongside Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman and I can’t wait to show people how my character becomes involved with such a fantastic duo!’
Since I’m not the biggest fan of Clara, I think this is great news. It will be nice to have someone else around for the Doctor to rely on. My only concern is that they’ll make him a love interest for Clara. Since we’ve recently experienced the Amy and Rory relationship, I hope they stay away from repeating the same theme.
