Back in 2102 it was first announced that a Shannara TV series based on the Terry Brooks novels was a possibility. Fast forward to 2014 and it appears that the show will definitely be a reality as MTV pulled the trigger and greenlit a 10-episode first season.
Jon Favreau was originally going to direct as well as executive produce, but had to step down from the former role due to a scheduling conflict, so Jonathan Liebesman (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) will take over to direct the first 2 episodes. EW reports that Terry Brooks and Dan Farah are still in place to executive produce and the show will be written by writer-producers Al Gough and Miles Millar (Smallville).
There are no casting announcements yet, but we’ll keep you apprised once we have more news.
While this is probably not a show MTV would have done before Game Of Thrones, it’ll be interesting to see how it will do in the shadow of its popularity. On that note, prepare for the uninitiated to call the show a “ripoff” despite the fact that the first Shannara book (The Sword Of Shannara) came out in 1977. However, the series will be based on the second book (The Elfstones Of Shannara) as it is the book that really cemented the series.
