Khaleesi is technically a title and not a name, but that’s not stopping parents from bestowing it on their daughters. The Baby Name Wizard Blog reports that 146 girls were named Khaleesi in 2012. It’s up 450% from 2011 and wasn’t even in usage before then. Wow.
The trend speaks to Emilia Clarke’s impressive portrayal of the fascinating character on Game of Thrones. Friends who watch the show but can’t keep names straight always know who Khaleesi is (they also recognize Dany). Though the respect and love for the character is completely understandable, I think I would have gone with Dany or Daenerys. Or maybe shove Khaleesi into the middle name spot. Any kid with the name Khaleesi is going to get questioned and technically, the kid shouldn’t watch the series until she’s old enough to handle the adult themes. She’ll hear from her parents about how awesome Daenerys Targaryen is, but she won’t be able to get to know the character she’s named after for a while. It’s an uh, interesting, name choice.
Makes the parents who named their kid “Arya” look downright sensible.
