For years, the 1701 USS Enterprise model that appeared in the original Star Trek series was on display in a rather undignified section of the Smithsonian museum: the basement gift shop. But, in honor of the museum’s 40 anniversary, the model has been restored to its former glory for an exhibit in the Boeing Milestones of Flight hall.
The prop had been hanging around the gift shop for decades and needed some serious attention. The Smithsonian’s chief conservator Malcolm Collum worked with Industrial Light and Magic (and also a few fans) to bring the model back to its last-known modification for the 1967 episode “Trouble with Tribbles”.
Star Trek fans can check out the exhibit starting this Friday.
