A third X-Men title is coming out in April as part of the Marvel NOW! initiative. That’s not so unusual; there are plenty of X-Men books. This series, however, focuses on the heroines of the mutants. Jubilee stars, and the supporting cast includes Kitty Pryde (!), Psylocke, Rachel Gray, Rogue, and Storm.
Writer Brian Wood and artist Olivier Coipel will bring the stories to life. I feel confident about the series because of something Wood said to USA Today:
“I feel like as far as the X-Men go, the women are the X-Men. Cyclops and Wolverine are big names, but taken as a whole, the women kind of rule the franchise. If you look at the entire world as a whole, it’s the females that really dominate and are the most interesting and cool to look at. When you have a great artist drawing them, they look so amazing and always have.”
Given how he’s writing Princess Leia in the brand new Star Wars series from Dark Horse, I think he’ll do a great job with this group. He also told USA Today that he’s pulling from two runs as inspiration for the story: Chris Claremont’s Uncanny X-Men in the 70s and 80s and Grant Morrison’s 2001 New X-Men issues.
I can’t wait to check it out.
