Start practicing your beats and your rhymes because a Game of Thrones-inspired rap album will be out this Friday. Even though it may sound like an April Fool’s Day prank, it isn’t a joke. HBO has hired ten hip-hop and Latin music artists including Big Boi, Common, Daddy Yankee and Bodega Bamz to rap about the show because they want to reach a larger audience in that demographic. They’ve put together a “mixtape” with ten songs called “Catch the Throne,” and it will be available online tomorrow as a free download.
It’s an inventive approach to tap the “multicultural” audience, and it will be interesting to see if it pays off. According to Wall Street Journal, one sample lyric from rapper Wale is as follows:
I’m tellin’ whoever messin’ with me
I can bring you that Khaleesi heat
Use my King, knack for words, as an actual sword
I can decapitate a rapper…
You can spot the obvious references like Khaleesi and decapitation, and the other songs in the collection will follow that model. The words are mixed with diagolue from the series as well as the score and mashed together with hip-hop beats. This is something I definitely have to check out.
