Learning to wield a lightsaber and fight with it is the subject of many daydreams – for children and adults. Alain Bloch realized he could turn that dream into a reality and created a combat choreography class in the Bay Area just for wannabe Jedis. First, he received some training from fencing instructor Matthew Carauddo and then the pair founded Golden Gate Knights.
The business has been running for two years. A group of students – some in costume – attend weekly classes for just $10 and learn the classic moves. The class is open to adults and teens, and it’s so popular that they have to turn away people because they don’t have room. As far as the attendees, Bloch said:
“We have people who are into film who want to learn how to do some choreography for their film projects. And we have just a lot of people who are interested in fun weekend activities who want to come out and do something interesting. We have a lot of people are into ‘Star Wars,’ or at least curious about ‘Star Wars.’ And we have a lot of people come out on fun dates.”
I’d love to see them start classes in other cities or a mobile class for conventions. I bet tons of fans would line up to attend.
