Good news Game of Thrones fans: season three will have several extended episodes! This is wonderful news since it seems to be the fastest hour on television and since the story is huge. George R.R. Martin’s tomes could fill up almost any amount of minutes available. As it is, they are constrained to HBO’s limits. One of the writers/producers, Dan Weiss, stated:
“One of the great liberties with HBO is we’re not forced to come in at a specific time. We can’t be under 50 minutes or over 60, but that gives us a lot of flexibility.”
He and David Benioff mentioned that last season’s episodes mostly clocked in at 52 minutes, and the season finale got an extra ten minutes. Benioff said this year has a lot of 56 or 57 minute episodes. I think that’s more than fitting considering the huge amount of ground they have to cover for book three (A Storm of Swords).
It might not seem like a lot more time, but if you add up the minutes, it’s almost an entire episode. Given that we only get ten episodes per season, that’s pretty fantastic. They expect that the season three finale will have additional time, too.
