When news hit that Star Wars Episode VII would be made fans immediately began to speculate what it would be about. Many hoped and guessed that Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn trilogy would be the right fit. Those books are part of what’s known as the Expanded Universe, and they would make excellent movies. However, much as I would like to see those brought to screen, I can’t imagine Lucas would use material that he didn’t come up with. There are levels of canon in Star Wars and, ultimately, Lucas’ word rules over all of them. However, things have changed now that Lucas is no longer in charge. He has turned the reigns over to Kathleen Kennedy and given his blessing to pull material from all over the Star Wars universe.
On that note, in the video after the break, Lucas states that he was written a treatment for episodes 7-9. However, in the same video Kathleen Kennedy notes that they are beginning to hash out stories for the next few films with a small team of writers. EOnline is also claiming that an inside source at Lucasfilm and “other sources close to the picture” say that the material for Episode VII is completely original:
In other words, forget the Star Wars novels. Forget the graphic novels. Forget everything you think you know about what happens to Luke Skywalker. According to my sources, Episode 7 will literally be nothing you’ve ever seen or read before from the Star Wars universe.
I’m okay with that.
