The Klingons in Star Trek Into Darkness almost looked entirely different. They could have looked distinct, fierce, and really quite beautiful. Artist Neville Page came up with these designs, and they are deliberately a departure from the classic look we’re all used to seeing. He had the following to say about the concepts:
This first round of images are some of the development of the Klingons. This was a very important assignment for me because I knew how important it was to the fans of the franchise. It was a delicate balance of respecting the established looks from previous incarnations yet delivering something appropriate for JJ’s film… Part of my self induced criteria was to do a cleaner version (especially regarding the forehead) and to make them sexy (or sexier if you already find them sexy!)
I definitely agree that his versions add a layer of sexy, and it’s a bummer that Abrams ultimately passed on them. Page’s designs are refreshing and offer diversity, too.
