There’s no lack of fan support for a second Serenity movie and the stars seem to be up for it, so why hasn’t Joss Whedon stepped up to the plate to make it happen? Even actor Sean Maher, better known as Dr. Simon Tam, is baffled by the lack of a second film:
“I wish I could wrap my head around it a little more. When I see [Joss Whedon], I’m like, ‘I don’t get it. Aren’t you like king of the world right now? Can’t you do anything?’
“‘And I know we can’t do another show. I get that. A television show would be very tricky with all of our availability, and I don’t think that’s in the realm of possibility. But what about another movie? You just shot Much Ado About Nothing in 12 days. You’re kind of amazing at that. You made that happen’.
“So when people ask me if there’s another one, I say, ‘You know, I don’t think so, but I don’t know, and I kind of don’t understand why’.”
Earlier this year at Whedon’s SXSW panel he told a room packed full of Firefly fans that he was up for another film and was even hoping it would happen, but that no one had ever called him.
I was fortunate enough to be at this panel and it was clear just how much he loves the Firefly universe and how enthusiastic he was about a possible film. The room actually broke out in cheers when he said he wanted to make one and Whedon looked absolutely thrilled with our response.
Now, this all happened months before The Avengers was the blockbuster it is now, so technically he wasn’t quite as big a deal at the time. Maybe someone needs to tell Joss that he doesn’t need to wait on the bigwigs anymore because he is one!
