George Lucas announces in the upcoming issue of Empire Magazine that he’s wrapping things up with LucasFilm so he can get away from big budget movies. He wants to retire, which he’s stated before, and hang out in his garage and do smaller, independent movies like his student film, THX 1128. In the interview, Lucas says:
I’m moving away from the company, I’m moving away from all my businesses, I’m finishing all my obligations and I’m going to retire to my garage with my saw and hammer and build hobby movies. I’ve always wanted to make movies that were more experimental in nature, and not have to worry about them showing in movie theatres.
So, it’s not clear how long it will take Lucas to wrap things up and walk away, how these hobby films will be viewed by the public, or what his departure might mean for a fifth Indiana Jones movie and the live-action Star Wars TV series. Hey, love him or hate him the guy has given us a lot of great movies. I hope he enjoys his retirement.
