If you’ve been wondering how Agent Coulson can be a part of Joss Whedon’s upcoming Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series after appearing to die in The Avengers, read on. Needless to say, possible spoilers are ahead.
A tipster for /Film claims that the pilot for the series will reveal that Nick Fury faked the whole thing just to give the Avengers a cause behind which they could all unite. This is a theory that has been tossed around before, so take it with a grain of salt.
Some S.H.I.E.L.D. members were in on it (including, possibly, Maria Hill played by Cobie Smulders) but The Avengers were not. Their security clearance wasn’t high enough. Coulson was forced to hold his breath as part of the ruse and that’s a point of contention among his colleagues After the fact, Fury moved him to a remote location until things died down, and then he was reinserted into duty at the time of the show.
Nothing too crazy in that scenario, in fact, it’s very, very plausible. The bit about them not having security clearance seems weak, but a manipulative Nick Fury seems right on target. How he actually survived being stabbed isn’t touched on at all, but I’m sure that could be explained away with a super-secret medical procedure and a bit of high-tech S.H.I.E.L.D. body armor. Regardless, Coulson is going to be pissed about his trading cards.
What do you guys think?
