Michael Bay took the stage at Nickelodeon Upfront last week to discuss his plans for an upcoming live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. The reboot is scheduled to be released for Christmas 2013. Three cheers for more TMNT, but fans may not be thrilled when they hear what Bay has in mind. He states the following in the video:
“When you see this movie, kids will believe one day that these turtles do exist, when we’re done with this movie. These turtles are from an alien race, and they’re going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely lovable.”
Yes, Bay said “aliens”. Does he understand what “mutant” means? It’s in the title for crying out loud. Part of the charm is that they’re just regular turtles from our planet who are mutated and get special powers. Aliens do not automatically make things better. I’d like to present Indiana Jones and The Crystal Skull as evidence of this.
Maybe, hopefully (please, oh, please), Bay misspoke. Perhaps he just had a moment and got the turtles’ backgrounds confused with something else. Maybe he was just over-caffeinated and tripped over words. Time will tell.
