It’s been nearly two years since we first heard that a “sequel” to Labyrinth was in the works, and now we have news that a director and writer have been chosen for the film. Most importantly, we also know that the movie will not be a reboot. We’re not even sure if it will be a sequel. At this point, it sounds more like a spinoff.
According to Deadline, TriStar has hired Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead) to direct and co-write the film with Jay Basu (Monsters: Dark Continent). The duo is set to begin work on the movie after Alvarez completes The Girl in the Spider’s Web, a sequel to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Based on the very adult nature of their previous work, hiring this duo to tackle a film set in the beloved Labyrinth universe seems odd. They will definitely need to shift gears a bit to tackle a challenge of this magnitude.
However, you can rest assured that this movie is not a remake. Insiders have made that very clear. Though, I assume that some familiar faces will show up in the film—but not Jareth the Goblin King. Definitely not *shakes fist*.
