Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary animator behind classics like My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Ponyo has revealed that his next film, The Wind Rises, will sadly be his last. The news came courtesy of Koji Hoshino who heads Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli speaking at the Venice Film Festival where the movie was screened.
“Miyazaki has decided that Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises) will be his last film, and he will now retire.”
72-year-old Miyazaki’s final film, about World War II-era airplane designer Jiro Horikoshi, came out in July in Japan but doesn’t yet have a release date in the United States.
