There exists, in Japan, a piece of art called Choju Jinbutsu Giga or “Scrolls of Frolicking Animals” that supposedly dates back to the 12th century or so. It’s thought to be the oldest piece of manga in Japan, possibly even the very first example of the artform (though there’s some contention regarding that point).
Enter Studio Ghibli, who have turned this ancient artistic artifact into a typically stunning bit of animation as part of a promotion for energy company Marubeni Shin Denryoku. Clocking in at just over half a minute long, the piece is a faithful rendition of the content of Choju Jinbutsu Giga set to some gentle, pleasant piano music. D’aww.
