Hollywood doesn’t like to let things go. Fans get attached to series and movies but so do the people who work on them. When you’ve got a solid story and universe, you don’t want to let go. It’s understandable. Chris Carter, creator of The X-Files, recently spoke with Empire magazine and they were sure to ask whether the franchise would get the rumored third movie. Both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are interested and, as it turns out, so is Carter. It just depends on the studio. Here’s what he had to say to Empire:
“It’s really up to Twentieth Century Fox, whether they have the will to do it. I think all of us are interested in putting the band back together. I have an idea for a third movie in my head. The colonisation date has passed [in the series, the date for the alien invasion was December 22, 2012 - Ed.] and that is something we wouldn’t ignore. For the second movie, we only had the budget for a standalone story, but we want to go back to the mythology.”
It’s far from anything certain but some hope is better than none, right?
Empire also brought up all the X-Files references in the series Spaced which led to Carter mentioning Simon Pegg. Carter says they considered casting Pegg in the second movie but that there wasn’t a part for him. If the third movie actually moves forward, Carter says he’ll “certainly” think about casting Pegg. I think that would be delightful.
