Peter Jackson’s upcoming Hobbit series has been given a bit of a shakeup to accommodate the recently announced third installment.
The third film in the trilogy will be called The Hobbit: There and Back Again—which was formerly the title of the second film. The release date is locked in for July 18th 2014. That second movie will now be called The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug with a release date of December 13th 2013.
In a statement, Warner domestic distribution prexy Dan Fellman said: “We wanted to have a shorter gap between the second and third films of The Hobbit trilogy. Opening in July affords us not only the perfect summer tentpole, but fans will have less time to wait for the finale of this epic adventure.”
And don’t worry—the first film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is still slated for a December 14th 2012 premiere.
