SXSW isn’t just about tech news, it’s the place to get fresh news of almost any geek variety. Joss Whedon appeared on a panel at the convention in Texas over the weekend, and to no one’s surprise, he professed his love for Firefly. He also stated that he’s up for making another movie or even more seasons of the television show. Hollywood should certainly be listening by now given that Whedon’s is absolutely everywhere and his destined-to-be-a-blockbuster, The Avengers, will be released soon.
Whedon stated (as reported by Indiewire):
I keep thinking they’re going to call me, crunch the numbers and say “Hey, we can make money from this!” — but they don’t. I would never rule it out, I love those people. But I can’t just wait by the phone.”
Interesting. As much as fans love the show, money matters. Fox has stated the series just wasn’t proving itself with numbers and therefore had to be canceled (though many believe it wasn’t given a fair shake). I’m a Browncoat through and through and I’d watch more of Mal Reynolds and his crew in a heartbeat. We’ve been teased about a possible return more than a few times though. Nathan Fillion and even writers have publicly stated that they would be more than happy to jump back into the ‘verse.
Are we beating a dead horse? Maybe not, but I’m not getting wound up about a Firefly revival until something concrete happens.
