Thirty-five years ago today a little film called Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope was released to the masses. For that reason, May 25th has become the official day to celebrate your geekdom.
Today also happens to be Towel Day—a day set aside for fans of The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy to commemorate the passing of the late author Douglas Adams. As the book states, a towel “is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have”, so make sure to have a towel handy at all times today in celebration of Adams’ life and work.
On that note, Modis has conducted their yearly Geek Pride Day survey and discovered that our ranks are swelling. They also uncovered some additional bits of information that you might find interesting. For example:
- 54 percent of both self-professed geeks and non-geeks rated geeks to be extremely intelligent, an increase from 45 percent in 2011
- 71 percent of survey respondents identified geeks as the go-to people for technology advice this year, up from 56 percent last year
- More than half of Americans (51 percent) define geeks as professionally successful, a significant jump from 31 percent in 2011

So, make sure to put on your favorite superhero shirt today and indulge in your passion for all things nerdy. Happy Geek Pride Day!!
