We’ve known that a female Doctor was a possibility ever since Matt Smith’s Doctor checked to see if he was a woman when he first regenerated, but it seems like Moffat is laying the groundwork to actually make it happen. Even better, he mentioned the need for one telling SFX:
“There easily could be a female Doctor. I think the next time might be a female Doctor. I don’t see why not. I think it’s good to do that.”
This seems to go along with what we saw in season 8 of the series. Not only did Clara impersonate the Doctor, but the Master became Missy. It might have surprised some fans, but it did not surprise the Doctor at all. Moffat told Wales Online:
“He doesn’t seem to register the fact that his old friend is now a woman. So obviously, he doesn’t think it’s a remarkable thing to happen.”
Although Moffat talked about a female Doctor as a real possibility, he chose not to speculate on the issue too much since Capaldi has only just taken on the role (and he’s really good in it). Still, for those hoping a female Doctor was in the cards, it’s looking more and more like the answer is yes.
