Remember when we mentioned that the five surviving members of Monty Python announced that they would be reuniting for a stage show? Well, we finally have a date! Yay!
The Monty Python crew–Eric Idle, Michael Palin, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones–noted in a press conference that Monty Python Live will take place on July 1st, 2014 at the 02 Arena in London, England. There are plans to televise the show, and a disc release will happen at a later date.
Phil McIntyre is producing and Arlene Phillips is choreographing some of the acts. The show, for the moment, is only a one-time thing—but there is talk of a tour sometime in the future.
So, what should one expect of a live, 21st-century Monty Python show? Well, according to John Cleese, there will be some classic material mixed in with some new stuff. Here’s what he had to say:
“People do really want to see the old hits, but we don’t want to do them in a predictable way. The main danger we have is that the audience know the scripts better than we do.”
Eric Idle also added that the 2014 show will feature “comedy, pathos, music and a tiny piece of ancient sex.”
Well played, Eric. Well played.
