Netflix quietly announced that a Castlevania series would arrive sometime this year. And that’s it. Seriously—this is the whole bit from the press release:
Castlevania Season 1, Part 1 Coming to Netflix in 2017
But wait! Here’s where things get really interesting.
Back in December we learned that Frederator Studios (of Adventure Time fame) was working on an “unnamed” project “based on one of the most world-famous video games of the last 30 years.” Back in 2015, producer Adi Shankhar noted that he was working with Frederator on a “super violent Castlevania mini-series” and that it would be based on Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. This is what Shankhar posted on Facebook yesterday:
Furthermore, IGN spoke with Shankhar and confirmed that it will, in fact, be an adaptation of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. He also dropped this gem:
“This is very much Castlevania done in the vein of Game of Thrones,” Shankar said of the project, noting that Warren Ellis, who wrote the series and is on board as a producer, “added so much depth to the material.”
And this one:
“[The series is] going to be R-rated as f***,”
Despite Netflix’s lack of detail in the announcement, it seems we have a pretty good handle on the direction of the show. It’s not what I would have expected, but I’m definitely intrigued.
