Hitachi 1 TBHitachi appears to beĀ  the first out of the gate with a 1 TB HDD that they will be showing at CES next week. It is really more of an announcement, because I don’t think anyone will be stopping by the Hitachi booth to see exactly what a 1 T drive looks like. It looks like every other HDD.
They are initially releasing the Deskstar 7K1000, a version that will be used for your average desktop computer. In the second quarter of 2007 they will be offering a CinemaStar version that is meant for use in DVR’s and set top boxes. There will be a third model meant for enterprise computing.

The Deskstar that will be shown at CES will retail for $399. That seems pretty reasonable to me. The only issue with drives that size is that if you really need that much space, you better have a good backup solution. You don’t want to lose a terabyte of data because one drive goes bad.
