Ideal for the home or small business, Iomega’s 1 TB StorCenter Wireless NAS is an easy addition that will hold all the data you need. It can hold 4- 250 GB 7200 RPM drives that can be set up as RAID 0 for speed, RAID 1 for reliability or RAID 5 for a combination of speed and reliability.

The device can also act as a UPnP AV media server (UPnP-compliant digital media adapter (not included) required to use multimedia server functions) or USB printer server. Unit has 2 USB ports available. Supporting Gigabit ethernet and 802.11g, the speed is as good as you are going to get from an external device. The wireless ability makes it a snap to install into your network. Also includes their Automatic Backup Pro software for a complete solution.

The device is shipping now at an MSRP of $899.95. There is also a 500 GB StorCenter that offers all the same functionality and features, but holds only 2 250 GB drives. With only 2 drives, RAID 5 is not possible, but RAID 0 and 1 are still available for $499.95.

To the viewers of this article,

I work for Berkeley Communications, a platinum elite authorized NetApp reseller . We sell a variety of other brands as well, but our main bread and butter is NetApp. If you haven’t heard of Network Appliance (NetApp), the company is known for its hardware storage solutions and also it’s software data management tools. Anyway, I want to point out my bias before continuing with my critique. This article caught my attention because it fails to highlight the software components that are crucial for many businesses. In addition, what about the huge security risk of wireless technology? I’ve even heard of copper wires being a security risk as opposed to fiber optics. For example, a person could cut a copper wire and basically stick an alligator clip on the cable (remember beige boxes from phone phreaks anyone?). This is near impossible with fiber optics. Wireless is insanely insecure and I predict in the future we will see tighter and tighter laws to combat these problems. (at least in the U.S.) This may be a good solution for an individual or small business, but I remain skeptical for anything else. However, I must admit the price is right! In comparison, check out the FAS6030 & FAS6070 from the newest FAS6000 series. It’s a 1000 times more expensive, but millions of times more powerful. They don’t even talk about the amount of disk space it can hold, but the amount of DISK DRIVES. I guess it comes down to what you are really looking for in a storage product. For me, security & software are factors that should not be ignored.
