A device that is a cross between a portable HDD and a media player, the Mvix MV-5000U is a new type of device that is a step in the right direction. It offers multiple video and audio outputs, IR remote and the ability to transmit signals using a low power FM transmitter. Not really sure why they didn’t take it just one step further and give it wireless LAN connectivity. Use the USB port to connect to your PC and use it like any portable HDD, and when unconnected you can use it to play media on your television/stereo.
Toms Hardware ran it through a multitude of tests and determined, So if you seek a solution that serves your media storage and playback requirements at the same time, the MV-5000U should serve as a great asset. It is quiet and looks neat, and Mvix continues to offer firmware updates, which should help accommodate future audio and video codecs.
Unit can be purchased with or without an installed HDD. With no HDD, it retails for $249. HDD options and prices are: 80 GB (+$59), 160 GB (+$79), 250 GB(+$109), 300 GB (+$159).
