With a seemingly neverending list of security breaches caused by lost laptops recently, the timing seems perfect for Seagate to begin shipping laptop hard drives with hardware based encryption.

A password will grant you full access to the drive, and there are certain to be applications written that will allow the use of fingerprints and other means of authentication. Simplicity is obviously the key, everyone is for security until it becomes a hassle.

Seagate will offer their Momentus 5400 FDE.2 (Full Disk Encryption 2) drives in capacities from 80-180 GB. Priced reasonably and letting the security take a back seat to usability will go a long way toward all mobile drives offering the same level of security. Not that I will give anyone my social security number ever again. We know how well that works out.
